FOR THE PREVENTION OF NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION

„For the Prevention of Nuclear Annihilation“ is a fictional Soviet medal never awarded to Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov, whose prudence during a nuclear false alarm incident in 1983 probably prevented a third world war.
As a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defence Forces, he rightly considered it a computer error when an early warning satellite signaled the alleged launch of American intercontinental missiles.
Petrov was neither awarded nor penalized for not initializing a retaliation strike.
